How God is speaking to us...

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

This has been our prayer and God has graciously been giving us His incredible joy, peace, and hope as we trust in Him.
It is also our prayer for you!

Bob and Jim

Bob will be getting a perma-cath "installed" on Wednesday and begin dialysis on Thursday. He'll be on dialysis three times a week for four hours each time. We're so thankful that he's getting into the system so quickly. Then by the middle of the month he'll go back on chemo as well. Scheduling these two procedures will be a challenge so that the chemo doesn't get "dialyzed" out.

My brother Jim who has gastro-esophogeal cancer, will begin to receive both chemo and radiation beginning the middle of August. He'll be getting large daily doses for a few weeks, so will likely be feeling pretty sick. Then he'll get a few weeks' rest before surgery in early November. In the meantime he continues to ride his bicycle for about twenty miles a day and his wife Kim is preparing the most nutritious cancer-fighting food for him!! I know they would appreciate your prayers.

Our son David and his wife Ann and their two little boys Billy (6) and Manny (4) are arriving from western NY on Tuesday for eight days!! We are SO blessed!!

Dialysis!!

Bob saw his nephrologist this morning and he has decided that it's time to get Bob on dialysis, at least temporarily. We'll see if it brings much improvement to his kidney function and over-all sense of well-being. Since Bob won't be having chemo for another two and a half weeks, this is a good time to begin.

Bob will get a port-a-cath inserted in his upper chest area quite soon, rather than having his veins poked every time he's hooked up to the dialysis machine.

We're very thankful that finally Bob's kidney problems will be receiving more potentially effective treatment.

Wonderful time together . . .

. . . but now we need to rest!!!

I got a bit carried away with posting pix so will exercise a bit more restraint today!!

We had a picnic with our dear friends Chris and Lyle Hopwood last evening, who have been like an aunt and uncle to our kids for the past 30 years. It was a great location to take family pictures and we're pleased with how they turned out.

Tim, Kim and the children left late this morning. Now we have a week to rest and prepare for David and Ann and their two little guys!!

Bob did amazingly well while the kids were here. He had much more stamina AND stimulation than he's had in a while. We know that it was much due to having our wonderful grandchildren here, but also sense that he's feeling better in general.

Tomorrow morning he has an appointment with his nephrologist and we're hoping and praying that there will be some more positive and speedy movement toward dialysis.

Grandkids here---YEAH!!

The pictures really tell the story. Vi was also here for the weekend but left to return to Edmonton at noon today. She and Bob had some great chances to relax together while the rest of us went on a few excursions. The kids loved being with her too. She's a very special Auntie

Bob's actually been feeling well enough to enjoy our wonderful brood!! Grandchilren are good medicine!! They leave to return to Regina tomorrow. And David, Ann, Billy, and Manny arrived on Aug. 2, staying for eight days.

We hope to make some progress getting Bob on dialysis in this next week.

Tim and Kim's children are Colby--8, Gracyn--6, Carson--4, and Mykenna--2. Pure delight!!!

We've spent a lot of time eating, playing, laughing and talking together. Papa's been getting lots of head rubs and Grammy gets lots of help making carrot/apple juice for Papa. We went to the Greater Vancouver Zoo yesterday and to the beach in the evening, to church this morning, and are going for a picnic tonight!!

Bob hasn't gone on most of the excursions except to the beach, but he joins in the fun when everyone is here. We're sure glad we saved the boys' Lego from over 30 years ago!! The guest suite in our condo complex is just fabulous and is right down the hall from our condo. And the weather's been just perfect so we can spill out onto the patio.

We continue to be full of THANKS for God's goodness--and family is at the top!! We are SO blessed!!

The Sun is Shining . . .

. . . both outside and inside!! After a few weeks of cool weather, it seems that real summer is finally coming to the Vancouver area. Bob and I ate our lunch on the patio today, basking in the warmth--he with his sweatshirt still on--but at least his "dome" was exposed!!

. . . AND the sun in shining inside too as we're excitedly awaiting the arrival of Tim, Kim, Colby, Gracyn, Carson, and Mykenna late this evening. They're on their way here from Regina for four wonderful days!! They'll be staying in the guest suite in our condo complex and all is in readiness. The guest suite is just down the hall from our little apt. so we'll be hearing the pitter patter of little feet and happy voices as they make their way down the hall to have breakfast with Papa and Grammy in the morning.

Then Vi will be spending the weekend with us as well. She's in Vancouver today on business and is able to spend a couple of days here. It's been so great to have visits from all of our children and two out of our four siblings. Barb and Buddy hope to come up from Texas in September, and plans are being made for Lois and Duane to make their way here from South America sometime in the next few months.

Yesterday Bob had two doctor's appointments. The first was with his oncologist. Although the plan was to resume chemo this week, she suggested (and we heartily agreed) that chemo be delayed for another three weeks until both Tim and David and their families have been here. She observed that Bob was feeling pretty good and didn't want his body to be given a "whack" when he wanted to be able to enjoy the grandchildren.

Then Bob saw our family doctor. Both doctors are very supportive of our desire to get on dialysis if the nephrologist approves. Bob will see the nephrologist on Tuesday. Since his kidney function is continuing to decrease we're hoping and praying that the specialist will push to get Bob into the system for dialysis. And being off chemo for three more weeks would provide a good opportunity to begin that.

Our lives are full in so many ways--full of appointments, wonderful houseguests, nourishing times of solitude and togetherness, the support of such loving and faithful family and friends, and the constant presence of our loving heavenly Father.

You can be sure that the new posts to come in the next few days will be mostly pictures of our adorable grandkids!!!

Challenging days and choosing life!!

Bob's blood work following the stent surgery hasn't shown any improvement in his kidney function, however after three days he's been feeling some better.

Yesterday morning I drove Barbie to the airport at 7:00 am and when I got home around 8:30, Bob was in the bathroom getting ready for church!!!!

Pastor Brian's been preaching a sermon series on the Psalms and he gave an excellent sermon on Psalm 121 entitled "TRUE SECURITY: Serving Notice on Fear". It was expecially encouraging as we've been frustrated at the seeming inability to move Bob towards dialysis, which we understand is suffering a shortage of availability right now in the Vancouver area.

Not only was Bob able to go to church, but we met some friends at a restaurant in the evening--and Bob even drove!!! I've done almost all of the driving for the past six months.

Then this morning we were talking about what we sense to already be places of healing in Bob's body. It's amazing that he has NO pain--just terrible fatigue because of his kidney dysfunction!! We're convinced that God has touched him in part and we need to do all we can to cooperate with what the Lord, diet, and treatments are already doing. He's decided to "push" himself to be more active (whether he feels like it or not!!) I think that today he's had a bit of an epiphany that goes something like this--"Well, since I'm alive, I'd better get on with living!!"

*******************************

I want to share something regarding my brother Jim. It's hard to believe, but five days after he returned home after his week with us, he himself got a diagnosis of cancer!!!! Before I go into more detail I'll let you know that his prognosis is pretty good, but the tumour is malignant!!

He'd been having some difficulty eating (even though he ate two dozen butter tarts when he was here!!), feeling that the food was having trouble going down before it got to his stomach. He was having a few tests but wasn't overly concerned about it. He also had lost about 20 pounds in the past few months. He thought it was because he was watching what he was eating and also bicycling about four times a week for 20 miles or more.

He had a CT scan and endoscopy two days after he returned to California, and last Monday got the diagnosis of "gastro-esophogeal cancer". Many more tests were done last week and he saw an oncologist on Friday who gave him some comforting news that it hasn't spread anywhere else in his body. The plan is to do surgery and chemo, however the chemo may come first in this case.

Jim's on a strict diet right now--eating mostly "soft" food--for obvious reasons. And when he was with us he learned a lot about fighting cancer nutritionally so is attempting to eat only food that will strengthen his own immune system to fight the cancer.

One of the hardest things for Jim was telling Dad and Mom, especially since they carry such a deep concern for us and have their own health needs at ages 88 and 89. But by Saturday, when he drove out to Palm Springs to visit them, he was able to tell them that his cancer is treatable.

Dad and Mom phone us every evening and pray with us before they go to bed and we've decided we need to have a family "conference call" every night to include us all. What a WONDERFUL way to end each day--safe in our Father's loving hands!!

Thanks so much for your love and prayers for us and I know Jim would appreciate your prayers too.

Surgery done!!

We're so happy to report that after a very long wait in Surgical Admissions yesterday, Bob finally had the procedure at 10:00 pm last night!! It's amazing that he was rolled into the O.R. at 10:00, given a general anaesthetic, and was fully awake in less than an hour. He never even saw the urologist/surgeon!!

The doctor phoned me on my cell phone (Barbie and I were actually at the hospital just outside the O.R. at that time) when it was finished and said that the replacement of the stent went well and this stent should be good for at least a year (the other one only lasted three months). He also said that there were a couple of stones in his bladder, which he removed. He's going to order some lab work to be done in the next couple of days and see how much his kidney function has improved before discussing when or if dialysis should begin. It seems that the closer we get to sensing it's time for dialysis, the more the doctors seem to "back-pedal" on it.

Bob said on the way home at midnight that he thought he was already feeling some better!! He's still sleeping and certainly deserves the privilege of sleeping as long as he wants, so I'll soon know how's he's feeling this morning.

I can tell you one thing for sure--I'M feeling a whole lot better!!!--and so very thankful!!

"Have Patience, Have Patience"

When our children were small, we often listened to an album that taught kids about the Fruit of the Spirit--love, joy, peace, patience, etc. Well, this afternoon when we learned that Bob's surgery would be delayed until tomorrow (and we're not absolutely certain it will even happen then!), the song about patience so appropriately came to my mind!!

This journey we're on is certainly training us in patience and perseverance. Bob went to bed quite early this evening and as we chatted together and shared our discouragement with one another, we decided to "count our blessings" instead. That sure is the best antidote for discouragement!! Then as we were praying, Dad and Mom phoned from California to pray with us, as they do every evening!! Now that's one of our HUGE blessings!!

Barbie was planning to fly back to Regina tomorrow but she's extended her stay until Sunday. She's such good company when Bob's resting so much of the time. She and I are going to spread a puzzle out on the table in a few moments and escape the pressures of life for a while!!

I'll add a few pictures taken this weekend. We bought a very good "juicer" in order to make Bob lots of nutritious veggie and fruit juices to aid in his healing. So we initiated the juicer making the most delicious carrot/apple juice and toasted to Bob's health!! (and ours too!!)

Bob really has no energy at all to engage in any activity--either physical or mental, and we are SO MUCH looking forward to the boost we're anticipating that he will receive once he's on dialysis.

We've spent a few hours watching Gaither Homecoming DVDs (while Barbie rubs her dad's head!!), which is always a great "spirit-lifter". And enjoying a meal outside together brings such joy too.

Again, we have so many things to thank God for!!

A couple more pictures!!

I made a couple of errors when attaching pictures to the "post" below that I'm unable to edit, so will now include a two pictures that I had intended to send. I still need to hone my computer skills!!

The picture of Bob and Jim was taken a few days ago when we went to the beach for fish 'n chips. And then the one of Jim and me was taken at 4:30 this morning!!

A new direction

Jim flew out of Bellingham at 7:00 am this morning, so he and I were up and out of the house by 4:45, which is when the picture of Jim and me sitting on the piano bench was taken. He managed to eat 25 butter tarts while he was here and didn't even gain a pound!!! It was such a treat to have him with us.

Barbie arrived late Monday night and will be here until next Tuesday. She's such a cheerful presence and LOVES rubbing her dad's head--and of course he loves having it rubbed!! So far he hasn't lost any hair--as if he had any hair to lose!!! But he still has his little fringe and his eyebrows!! He does wish however that he wouldn't have his chin to shave each morning.

Barbie and I went with Bob to the urologist appointment this morning, and got the results of the ultrasound which showed that the stent in the left ureter is becoming blocked. It was our intention to ask for Bob to be put on dialysis as soon as possible, and the urologist agreed, although he wants to replace the stent before Bob begins dialysis. That will happen on Monday morning, with dialysis to follow fairly soon.

We have cancelled his chemo for this Friday, and feel very good about this decision. The Lord has indicated to us through the wise and caring counsel of family, friends (some who have a lot of medical expertise), and our own growing sense, that care for his kidneys now is of greater importance than even the cancer--especially zapping more toxins into his body when his kidneys can't hardly handle anything now. It's amazing how "clear" the message has been because it has come with such unanimity. This is so encouraging to me--and to Bob too, although he's so fatigued he doesn't express his excitement like me--of course he doesn't EVER do that--even when he's feeling great!!!!

In a phone conversation with the oncologist this afternoon, she also felt that chemo should be delayed for now until Bob's kidneys are stablized. We're so grateful for that.

This will prevent us from going to Regina next week, but we're hoping still go in a few months, when he'll likely have more energy than ever having been on dialysis. Of course there's still the cancer, but for some reason we feel less concerned about that right now.

It's been exciting to see how God is "working all things together for our good" in launching us in this new direction with such hope and peace and the approval of all of Bob's specialists.

Jim's here!!

Canada Day Weekend

I haven't updated our blog since Monday, hoping I would have more definitive news to share in regards to Bob's treatment. His condition is really quite complicated with both the cancer and kidney failure as serious threats to his life simultaneouly, and the possible treatment for each one exacerbating the other condition. Because the side-affects are similar to both chemo and his kidney dysfunction, it's hard to determine which is the more serious disease that needs particular attention. However, this weekend we both feel quite certain that the kidney dysfunction is the one that needs to be more vigorously addressed at present.

Bob will be having an ultrasound this week to find out whether the stent that was put through his left ureter way back at the end of March is still doing its job or whether it needs to be replaced. His kidney function has dropped to 12% from 15% in the past few weeks. Consequently he is always very fatigued.

Amazingly enough, Bob looks quite good in the pictures I take and send. Of course, I'm not going to be circulating pictures of him that are uncomplimentary!!! But he definitely looks better than he feels. Thankfully his spirits are good and we very much enjoy life together when he's not sleeping!!

We are planning to fly to Regina July 14 to 20 to see our kids and grandkids and are hoping and praying that Bob will feel well enough to go and that the immediate threat to his body has been dealt with, even if temporarily.

My brother Jim flew up from California on Wednesday and will be here for a week. It's been great having him here--mostly just enjoying hanging out together at home or down at the beach.

And Barbie's arriving on Monday evening for eight days!! Again, we have so much to be thankful for.
